EncodeHD 1.1.140.0 Released, with source!
Okay guys, so I’ve made a number of decisions over the past few days based on some great feedback. I’ve decided to open source EncodeHD and the Workstation Migration Assistant. I’ve spent the past few evenings doing some code cleanup on EncodeHD – removing some unnecessary stuff and fixing a nasty bug. I’ve also built the final (well, by me anyway) binary build. So, here it is.
Changelog:
- CHANGE: Removed all update checking code
- CHANGE: Removed About dialog
- CHANGE: Updated FFmpeg to r20060
- CHANGE: Updated MediaInfo to 0.7.22
- FIX: If the input audio was not AAC and the bitrate was too low, encoding would fail (due to an attempted stream copy)
You can download in the EncodeHD section.
I’ve decided to put EncodeHD on GitHub, and you can find all of the source code here.
Please note that the GitHub source doesn’t include any binaries and is only the source code so it won’t run unless you’ve got the rest of the EncodeHD binaries (ie, FFmpeg, MediaInfo etc).
The Workstation Migration Assistant will follow, I still need to do some code cleanup here.
Hope this makes everyone happy
Dan

Makes me sad to hear that you won’t be updating this anymore. I really loved this program and I continually rely upon it to this day for syncing video to my zune and other devices. It’s good to see that the code is freely available for the community to pick up the slack.
Can’t wait to see what projects you create in the future, Dan!
Thanks again for your hard work Dan!
Dan – Thanks so much for sharing your work – used your tool for a long time!
Thanks a lot for a great program Dan, and thanks for open sourcing it, so that your work does not go unnoticed.
I too Dan have used both programs(Encode360 and EncodeHD). I love them both and admire all the work you have put into these programs! I have been a long time user and follower of your work, thank you!!
On a side note, and not sure if this is the proper place to ask this, but I’ve had problems with the files that Encode360 produces. I can’t seem to import the files into say Adobe Premiere or even EncodeHD without errors or app hangs. What I’m trying to do is take a file I’ve previously converted using Encode360 and then later I want to convert it to play on my iPhone with EncodeHD, I can never get it to encode. I’m assuming the fault lies with Encode360, but maybe you’ve seen this before and can point me in the right direction.
I know you hate going back to Encode360, as it is outdated, but I can’t seem to find anything in terms of help on either programs.
Hi David,
It depends on the input to Encode360, but assuming it’s high quality, it’ll output WMV9 or WVC1 with WMAPro audio. using standardised Microsoft methods As far as I know, 3rd party decoding of WMAPro isn’t possible with Premiere, and in it’s infancy in FFmpeg.
The fault isn’t really with Encode360, just the proprietary nature of the WMV codecs.
:\

I appreciate the responce Dan.
I was kinda afraid that was what the issue is. After messing around with the files a little it lead me to believe it was the audio that was holding me back. I’ll see what I can do about the audio(maybe stripping it out and re-encoding it)? If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
Again, thanks for two great encoders! And I’m sad to see you are dropping the projects….I’m eager to see what else you might be working on in the future.
Dave
Dan, Thanks …i make streams for ustream .. i try it…
I just found your site today and lovely program only to find that you may discontinue it
shame I did not find it sooner..
keep up the good work on your apps..
Thanks..
Great applications, but I have a heck of a time finding the DOWNLOAD links on your webpage. Is it gone? Just one suggestion, you should have a page on your webpage for DOWNLOADS.
Just got a blackberry and what a surprise to see that your new program supports it (i have been using 0.86 for a long while now).
Thanks and great job.
how can i chagde the XBOX 360 audio BITRATe settings?
Great tool! Thx!
Hi great app but I’m having problems with MKV to PS3.The app works fine for xbox360 but on the PS3 it says file is unsupported can you tell me where I’m going wrong
Dan,
excellent products. I’ve been writing my own version of encodeHD as I’m just getting back into encoding video (after a7 year hiatus), and it seems that there is still a need for automation apps. I really like what you’ve done and I will probably modify the source to better fit my needs, but you’ve done 99% of the work for me that I was not looking forward to. I’m just going to automate it a little further and make it so that it will keep a live watch on folders so that it will pick up files on its own to start encoding. Once again, you’ve saved me weeks worth of work. Thanks!
Hey,
I tried converting an .mp4, but it came out as another .mp4 lol.. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong, I tried it several times, and it doesn’t seem to work. Any suggestions as to what I’m doing wrong?
Regards,
Hey, sorry for the delay in replying. You’re not doing anything wrong. MP4 is the output format of EncodeHD
Hey Dan!
Im not sure if its a new release issue or if I have never run into this problem. When I use the encodeHD to convert an MKV with 5.1 Dolby sound to the Apple TV preset I run into some serious distortion in the sound. I was wondering if this was an issue you are aware of or if there is a work around for it.
Thanks a bunch
Hey, sorry for the delay in replying. I’ve been sick.
I haven’t been working on EncodeHD in a while, but it could be an issue with the version of FFmpeg that’s included. I’d try upgrade to the latest nightly. To do this:
- Go to this site: http://ffmpeg.arrozcru.org/autobuilds/
- Download the latest 32-bit build (it doesn’t matter if you use a 64-bit OS. EncodeHD is compiled as x86 only).
- Extract FFmpeg.exe from the archive and use it to replace the version included with EncodeHD.
Hopefully this will help.
Cheers, Dan
Sorry for the stupid question, but before using encodeHD, how do you combine several .vob files into one ?
Good work, do you think to add option for convert in Samsun Omnia I900? or it’s possible use one of other device for Omina i900?
Thanks
Hey there. I’m no longer developing EncodeHD, but having a quick look at the video specs, I think the iPhone preset should work.
Thanks, I hav try with Zune the size is a litte small that Omnia I900 but works.
I will try also with IPhone thanks
I have a problem with the sound when I convert my videos with this program.
So far I have tried YoutubeHD, Western Digital TV and ZuneHD conversion methods all they give me the same error.
The problem is that when I convert my videos with the H.264 encoding on the sound pops and waves rapidly between left and right sound channel when there’s a bit louder and more sudden sound.
When I turn this feature off, it goes away but unfortunatelly my winamp can’t display the videos anymore.
Any guesses why this happens? I also downloaded the latest ffmpeg.exe from your link. Didn’t change anything.
Hey. Sorry I’m not sure why this is happening, and I’m afraid I’m no longer developing EncodeHD – I just don’t have the time any more. Could you maybe email me a log file and if it’s something simple I might be able to help.
