EncodeHD 0.98 beta Released

We’re getting there! I’m running out of version numbers though, and I have so much I want to pack in before we get to a stable 1.0 release…

Might be some issues around BlackBerry Storm / Bold H.264. If anyone can help me with this (I don’t have either!) I’d appreciate it.

I’m also considering a namechange. EncodeHD was initially more of a temporary placeholder until I came up with something better (like VisualHub!)… Suggestions?

Download is available in the EncodeHD section of the site, and here’s what’s new since the last release:

  • NEW: Support for BlackBerry 9500 Storm
  • NEW: Support for BlackBerry 9000 Bold
  • NEW: Support for BlackBerry 8900 Javelin
  • NEW: Support for BlackBerry 8800 Indigo
  • NEW: Support for BlackBerry 8700 Electron
  • NEW: Support for BlackBerry 8300 Curve
  • NEW: Support for BlackBerry 8200 Kickstart
  • NEW: Support for BlackBerry 8100 Pearl
  • NEW: Zune Screen and separate TV Output Support
  • CHANGE: The Zune profile now respects the different resolution restrictions of both 25FPS and 30FPS source content
  • CHANGE: Advanced FFmpeg Flags can now be retained without being enabled
  • CHANGE: Revised Advanced Dialog (for future expansion)
  • CHANGE: Revised About Dialog
  • CHANGE: Other minor UI Tweaks
  • CHANGE: More verbose logging
  • CHANGE: Updated MediaInfo to 0.7.10+ (01-02-2009)
  • FIX: Check for updates would fail if the locale used , for a decimal
  • FIX: Aspect Ratio detection would fail if the locale used , for a decimal
  • FIX: If URL handler was broken, app would crash when clicking the Donate button (hilarious!)

    Hey,

Sounds like a terrific program! Too bad it isnt working for me yet, but.. maybe you can help me with this! :) I downloaded a movie (*.wmv) with AC3 audio. I try to play it at my PS3 but theres no sound.. found out, your program can change this for me.. unfortunatly i get this error when trying to covert it:

ffmpeg.exe Error: Unsupported codec (id=86056) for input stream #0.0 (Exit Code: 1)

Any idea what i’ve done wrong or what i forgot to do? Or is this simply a non-supported file type in your program?

Keep up the good work! :)
    Jerry

      Hi Jerry,

Actually the problem here is the WMV input. I’m going to presume it’s not actually AC3 audio and in fact, WMAPro (does surround like AC3). FFmpeg doesn’t support WMAPro decoding or encoding yet.

      Sorry about that, Dan

Check this repo http://svn.ffmpeg.org/soc/wmapro/ to reinstall ffmpeg with patch to support wmapro codec.

Are there plans to make it so xbox users can get 5.1 audio using EncodeHD?

    • Dan Cunningham 18 February 2009 at 9:58 pm #

      Hi Joshua,

That’s really down to either (a) Microsoft supporting AC3 audio (either decoded or passthrough) or (b) the FFmpeg team reverse engineering the WMAPro codec (for both decoding and encoding). Given that reverse engineering can take a very long time, it’s more likely that Microsoft would support AC3 sooner – and there seems to be quite a bit of pressure on them to do this. Fingers crossed it happens soon – at that point it shouldn’t take me long to get it working.

      Cheers, Dan

Will there be .mkv to “Xbox 360 extender format” support?

    • Dan Cunningham 18 February 2009 at 9:59 pm #

      Hi,

The X-Box 360 profile should work for extenders, unless I’m mistaken.

      Cheers, DAn

Dan, yes, it works, my bad.

Another question, those of us who only need to encode files for Xbox 360, are we better stay with Encode360 for the whole 5.1 reason? Does it support .mkv too? I mean I know it hasn’t been updated for a while, but still.

and please keep the name “EncodeHD”, it’s catchy and straight to the point:)

It’s really up to you. You’re right, Encode360 hasn’t been updated in a long time, and won’t be, for reasons I’ve already outlined. It does have the added benefits of supporting 5.1 sound and hardcoded subtitles – but these are only of benefit to X360 users. If 5.1 or hardcoded subtitles are must-have features, then stick with Encode360.

On the other hand, EncodeHD doesn’t suffer the same codec issues, should be faster (as it’s multi-core), is actively developed, and has a lot more potential (in my opinion).

And yes, EncHD does support MKV (anything FFmpeg supports basically!).

      Cheers, Dan

Windows 7 allows Xvid/Divx/MP4/x264 streaming to extenders, so you could use Xvid+AC3 with windows 7 (no more converting to WMV/MPEG2 yaaaaay! ).

I’ve been using my 360 as and extender to my Windows 7 PC for a few weeks now and couldn’t be more pleased with it :) . No major faults with it, even though its still an early version.

Kick ass app, Dan. Just got an iPhone and went through my usual angst of not being able to use VisualHub, then I found this. It’s working great on my x64 install of Windows 7 (no idea if you’ve tested on win7!). Tried WinAvi and some others, and yours is just hands-down the simplest with the best UI. Thanks!

      Cheers Zac.

I’m a massive VisualHub fan too and was very sad to see it go. I still can’t find a simple encoding solution for OSX which I mostly use at home. :\

I’m actually using Win 7 as my main work OS so EncodeHD is fully tested and working just as well as on XP / Vista!

      Cheers, Dan
