EncodeHD 0.73

Another new release. This adds some new features and fixes numerous bugs. I’m not saying it fixes everything, but we’re getting there I think.

Download link and changelog in the EncodeHD > Download section

Sorry if haven’t replied to all the emails I’ve gotten but I never expected to get so many! If you have bug reports, please use the issue tracker and email cases at dcunningham.fogbugz.com.

Oh, and one other thing. This IS a beta. The idea is to find problems and try to fix them. That being said, it’s also free and I’m doing this in my spare time. If you don’t like or need it, then don’t use it. But please, refrain from sending me nasty emails ranting about how sh*t the app is. It’s very childish.

I’m wondering if anyone experience soft crackling sound when try converting from apple movie trailers ?

    • Schlicky 11 December 2008 at 6:51 pm #

Hey Cyan, Beta 0.80 fixed the crackling issues I tested in the Apple Trailers I had.

Hopefully you’ll get to test it tomorrow (12/12)

  3. Schlicky 8 December 2008 at 3:08 pm #

Hmmm – have you got a trailer I can test bud ? What profile are you using ?

  4. Schlicky 8 December 2008 at 3:45 pm #

I agree that there are some issues with MOV – MP4 Conversions. I used the PS3 profile and the following souce files:

    http://downloads.paramount.com/mp/startrek/Trlr2_internet_480p.mov
    http://pdl.warnerbros.com/wbmovies/watchmen/trailer2/watchmen2_lg.mov

On the Star Trek trailer, there seems to be crackling when the robocop talks – but that’s the onl issue there.

On the watchmen trailer, there seems to be no sound after the person is thrown through the glass.

    Checking others.

Getting a strange message when trying to send bug report ‘ScoutUserName not specified.’

  6. Dan Cunningham 8 December 2008 at 8:39 pm #

Yeah, it’s down to the method I’m using to submit bug reports. :\ If the bug report gets too long, it’ll fail to send. I’m looking into this too. For the moment, you can work around it by manually emailing the EncodeHD.log file in your Temp folder to cases at dcunningham.fogbugz.com.

    Cheers, Dan

Have the ScoutUserName error fixed for the next release. Now onto the other millions of bugs… :\

dan will using appleTV profile allow me to play it on the 360.
my purpose is the AC3 passthru 5.1

i dont like the 2.0 stereo.

honestly i am not sure why you cant just use the same encode360 stuff for the 360.
wmv for the 360 is stillt he best way to go.

i have yet to get an MP4 file to work yet on my 360. using the 360 profile.
i will try the appleTV profile and see what happens.

giving you an example file wont really matter because i have tried new mkv and OLD avi, and not so old avi (divx or xvid)
so it doesnt seem to matter what file i choose.
so maybe its the version of klite i am using?

the only reason i dont upgrade klite is because it typically totally screws with my Encode360 subtitle’s.
it usually stops encoding subtitles even after i go into ffdshow and set subtitles as on.

i just think if you are going to make an all in one app you should make the 360 profile option be WMV or MP4.
MP4 defenately was a lot faster, but they wont work it seems, for me.
so i cant even compare quality between MP4 and WMV.

v_lestat, if you rename the .mp4 to .avi made with the 360 profile it will play on the 360, at least it did for me.

  10. Chris 10 December 2008 at 9:01 pm #

I just finished encoding an .mvk file using the 360 profile (took a good 8 or 9 hours to convert) and it won’t play on my 360. I renamed the file to .avi and the 360 told me I needed an update (which I had downloaded previously). So I downloaded the update again, rebooted the 360 and now it just says unsupported file. Any ideas? I tried using encode360 but it doesn’t like .mkv files as a source file.

  11. Schlicky 10 December 2008 at 9:30 pm #

    Long live the PS3 !

Only joking Chris, I’ll try and get a look into the problems you are having.

  12. Chris 10 December 2008 at 10:13 pm #

    Har har :)

I’m going to try another (smaller) file in the meantime to see how it comes out.

  13. Moose 10 December 2008 at 11:41 pm #

I too am having the same problem were .MP4 files will not play on 360 but will play on PC.

  14. Schlicky 11 December 2008 at 10:14 am #

Anyone got the specific specs to the .MP4 format running on 360 ?

  15. Rek84 11 December 2008 at 2:59 pm #

I am having a problem with both PS3, AND Xbox 360 conversions. I’ve been trying to convert various large .mkv files, and no matter what I do, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 say “unsupported file format” or sometimes “data corrupted.” I’ve tried passing ac3 audio for PS3, and not passing, and it still doesn’t make any difference. I have not been able to make a file using EncodeHD that either my PS3 or my Xbox360 will recognize and play.

    • Schlicky 11 December 2008 at 6:54 pm #

We are currently testing large .mkv files at the moment with the new beta.

      How big is the file Rek84 ? I’m assuming it’s something like a Blu-ray rip ?

  16. Schlicky 11 December 2008 at 6:55 pm #

What are peeps using to watch .mp4’s on their systems ?

For example, I’m using TVersity with Transcoding disabled.

  17. Geoff 11 December 2008 at 7:26 pm #

Trying a .mkv to 360, 720 blue ray conversion now… will let u know how it goes.
    102 mins remaining ;)

  18. v_lestat 11 December 2008 at 7:59 pm #

hey dan, the email bug report is working in 0.73.
i am at work right now and didnt right down the error message but it was wierd, i didnt understand what it meant. (which is suprising as i can usually decifer errors pretty easily)

true type font subtitles in an mkv file will make encodeHD crash also.
this happened in encode360 and it warned me about truetype fonts then crashed, and i tried it in encodeHD and it crashed too but didnt say anything about fonts.

i do not think 0.72 did this as i swear i had encoded this file before.

  19. Joshua Carter 11 December 2008 at 9:26 pm #

The 5.1 audio on the xbox 360 files is important to me, is there a way to make that work? Tversity maybe?

  20. Geoff 11 December 2008 at 9:37 pm #

Just succeessfully converted a 720 mkv to 360 went for 3/4 quality and got great results, changed .mp4 to .avi out of habit. Going for full quality now…

    • Schlicky 11 December 2008 at 9:48 pm #

      That’s a great start Geoff :)

  21. Von_braun 12 December 2008 at 7:23 am #

Converted a sample of a blu ray ripped in .mkv resulted in a good quality played fine on 360.
Tried converting an .mkv TV show under 360 settings resulting video looked good but had bad audio (sounded like low bit mp3s from 1998) and wouldnt play on 360.
Converted that same episode in handbrake and resulting file worked on 360 and sounded the same as source.
Not complaining just informing, I like the app keep up the good work.
Using tversity with transcoding set “only when needed” and windows media 9

    • Schlicky 12 December 2008 at 10:40 am #

      Thanks Von_braun,

Any constructive feedback is really welcome. The more we have the more Dan can implement the fixes for the next beta :)

  22. Rek84 13 December 2008 at 3:29 pm #

Hi Schlicky, Yes, it was a blue-ray rip. I was going for full quality, I haven’t tried it on anything less. I’m fixing to try the new .8 version and see how that goes. As far as what I was using to watch it, I tried both streaming the file, and burning it on a disc. Both came up as either unsupported data, or corrupted data on both the PS3 and the 360. All the work going into this program is greatly appreciated!!!!!!

    • Schlicky 13 December 2008 at 5:29 pm #

Rek84 – one article I read stated that the 360 and PS3 have trouble Streaming / playing files greater the 4GB.

I need to look in to this a little more…

  23. Rek84 13 December 2008 at 9:48 pm #

    Schlicky,

I think that might have been a problem in the past. I’ve been streaming compatible .mpg files or .wmv files that have sometimes been up to 12 gig or more. Also I’ve been playing 8 gig files just fine by either streaming or burning to a double layer dvd. Not sure what is happening, but the larger file sizes can be played without problems, as long as the file is compatible with the respective system. I’m encoding an 8 gig mkv file right now (tyring the ps3 format again) with the new .80 version, and will let you know how that goes. My system is a dual core Athlon60fx, running WindowsXP pro, with 2 gig ram. Once again, all the work going into this is much appreciated!!

  24. BBG 15 December 2008 at 2:02 am #

Is there any chance that is is going to be multi-threaded?

  25. Larry Clark 16 December 2008 at 3:12 am #

Thanks keep up the good work, I’ve been converting flv files for about an hour and the work on my psp and ipod.

  26. Smashd 17 December 2008 at 3:50 pm #

OMG thanks Dan ! For some reason, i could remux some of the mkv’s to Mp4 360…

Do you think that 360’s mp4 will support 5.1 channel somedays ?

Thanks, Encode Hd rocks, i could get the Enc360 to work over XP64.. anyway, i wont!

    Later!
