WMA Progress: Limited Beta

Heh, so it’s all taken a little bit longer than I would have liked, but I think I’m finally in a position to let people start playing with the Workstation Migration Assistant. There’s probably a whole heap of bugs that I haven’t found yet, and this is where I’d appreciate some assistance. I don’t have *all* the features I wanted included just yet, but I figure I’d be best to try get a version 1.0 out sometime shortly after the release of Vista Service Pack 1 - which is what a number of organisations have been waiting for before looking at their migration plans.Testing is also underway within my own company, but since we aren’t on Vista yet (and don’t plan to for another few months), our testing is limited strictly to XP > XP wipe and load and machine replacement scenarios. Ideally, I’d like to get a few XP > Vista and Vista > Vista testers as I’ve been doing this entirely in a Virtual Machine environment so far.

I’m looking for a spread of people who have some experience with USMT ranging from basic to very experienced, but in general should be technically-minded.

If you’re interested in helping out, drop me an email to dan _at_ dcunningham.net, or leave a comment here.

Update: Thanks to all who got back to me. Unfortunately I’ve had to limit the numbers due to an overwhelming response. I want to keep the group relatively small for the moment but may consider expanding this out when I get some feedback from the existing testers.

Cheers, Dan

  1. Mr. Cunningham,
I have been using USMT for about 3 years now and I have come to love it. I work for a deployment project for Amtrak nationwide and would love to test out your GUI. I originally edited USMT 2.6 and created a batch file to accommodate the Amtrak environment, and have been working on 3.1 for about 2 weeks to prepare for our vista deployments later this year. Please let me know if you would like me to help out, and thanks for offering a great project to us in the deployment world!

  2. Hello!

I would like to test WMA with a XP to Vista migration I am currently planning. This is just a first test from my personal PC to Vmware but it might give some sort of indication if everything works as you have planned.

    Thanks,
    Teemu
